Google Just Added AI Mode To Search, Here’s What That Means For Dentists

Search used to be simple. It's getting more complicated by the day.

We’re wrapping our our mini-AI series today, as it relates to Google and Search. We’re going to be breaking down this news, Google putting an AI button within Search as they continue to fight off ChatGPT.

Search used to be simple. Type something in. Scroll through a list of links. Click the one that looked best.

But Google is officially changing that.

They have rolled out a new AI Overview mode inside Search, which of course is powered by Gemini. Instead of showing results, it shows answers. AI-written. Right up top, above the fold. It’s fast. Conversational. And it feels pretty helpful.

The biggest part? They are adding AI buttons for quicker access to follow ups. This is an obvious play at eating into ChatGPT’s experience.

But here’s the problem…

It’s Also Blocking Patients From Finding You

Google’s new AI Overviews often answer questions without showing links at all.

So if someone searches:

“What’s the cost of dental implants in Miami?”

They get a full AI-written answer, no click needed. No website visit (yet). No call to your office (yet).

The user still needs an actual dentist, of course. But there are no connections being made between intent and solution, above the fold. It’s getting more difficult to stand out, it’s just a different game than it has been the last 20 years.

So, what are you supposed to do?

What We Are Doing For Our Practices Right Now

I’m talking to you, practice owner. I’m talking to you, DSO.

It’s time to make sure you are running a well-oiled machine and you are investing your marketing dollars in areas of impact. It is not the same game it has been. If you are continuing to strategize like it is the same game, you’re going to be in a really tough spot by the end of the year.
