What’s up!
For the past year I've been telling you that AI Search visibility matters. That AI Overviews and AI Mode are becoming the new front door for patient acquisition. That your website needs to feed the AI deciding whether to recommend you.
And for that entire year, there's been one frustrating problem. There was no way to actually measure any of it. You couldn't see whether Google's AI was pulling from your site or skipping right over it. You were flying blind.
That has changed.
Last month, Google launched a brand new report inside Google Search Console called the Search Generative AI Performance report. For the first time ever, you can see exactly how often your website appears inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google built the scoreboard.
Here's what the report shows you. Impressions, meaning how often pages from your site appeared inside AI-generated answers. Which specific pages are being surfaced. What countries and devices your AI visibility is coming from. And how it's all trending over time, down to the hour.
One thing it doesn't show yet is clicks. Google isn't telling us how many people click through from AI answers to your site. Not shocking. But impressions alone are a massive unlock because now you can finally answer the question: “Is my practice even in the game when AI answers patient searches?”
Here's how to check if you have it.
Log into Google Search Console (if your marketing company manages it, ask them for access, it's your data). Look in the Performance section for a new Generative AI view. Google started rolling this out to a small test group and expanded access on June 23, so it's hitting more accounts every week. If you don't see it yet, check back. It's coming to everyones dashboard.
A couple important things to know.
The data only goes back to mid-May 2026. There's no historical backfill, which means every week you're not looking at this report is baseline data you can never get back. Start tracking now.
And here's the one that made me nervous. Google also added a toggle that lets site owners block their content from appearing in AI features entirely. A kill switch. If you opt out, your practice will not show up in AI Overviews or AI Mode at all. I can imagine a scenario where a well-meaning IT person or webmaster flips that switch thinking they're protecting the site. For a dental practice, that would be self-inflicted invisibility. Make sure nobody touches it.
So what do you do with this report once you have it?
First, look at which pages are getting AI impressions. I'd bet it's your service pages and any content that directly answers patient questions. That tells you what's working.
Second, look at what's NOT showing up. If your implant page has zero AI impressions and implants are your highest-value service, that's your roadmap. That page needs deeper content, real FAQs and specifics AI can pull from.
Third, screenshot your numbers monthly. This is your new visibility scorecard and the practices that track it will spot shifts months before the ones that don't.
The era of guessing whether AI sees your practice is over. Google handed you the answer key. Go look at it.
Have you checked Search Console this month, or does your marketing company keep that data behind the curtain? Hit reply and tell me, I read every single email. And if you can't get access to your own Search Console, that's a red flag worth talking about.
